Maavoli – Reviving the Ancient Tamil Fire Dance
(Karthi Sutruthal – The Traditional Palmyra Fireball Rotation)

Workshop Description:

Step into a 4,500-year-old Tamil tradition with Maavoli, the spectacular eco-friendly fire ritual performed during Karthigai Deepam. Also known as Karthi Sutruthal, this ritual has been celebrated for generations to warm homes after the monsoon, drive away insects, and purify the surroundings — all while creating a breathtaking display of whirling sparks under the night sky.

In this immersive, hands-on workshop, participants will:
	•	Learn the history, cultural significance, and science behind Maavoli, supported by archaeological evidence from 3,000-year-old rock paintings.
	•	Master the traditional method of crafting a Maavoli fireball using dried palmyra stalks and natural materials.
	•	Practice safe handling and rotation techniques to create a silent, eco-friendly, fireworks-like spectacle.
	•	Take home their own hand-made Maavoli to recreate the experience.

About the Trainer

Perumal Panayeri
Founder – Karumpanai Livelihood Research Centre, Kanchipuram
Perumal Panayeri is a dedicated researcher, innovator, and palm-based livelihood promoter from Uthiramerur. For over a decade, he has been working year-round with palmyra resources — from food products to traditional crafts. His research has led to two patent applications (with two more in progress), including a groundbreaking method for producing palm sugar naturally, without machinery or adulterants.
He has been instrumental in reviving traditional palm products such as Karupati (palm jaggery), Ingi Karupati (ginger palm jaggery), and Suku Karupati (dry ginger palm jaggery), ensuring premium quality standards to benefit palm climbers in today’s economic climate.
Passionate about cultural preservation, Perumal conducts Maavoli workshops with his team across festivals and community events, showcasing this ancient fire ritual as a safe, soundless, and chemical-free alternative to fireworks. His work blends cultural pride with environmental responsibility, inspiring the next generation to embrace their heritage.
